General breed information
The American Quarter Horse is a breed native to the United States. The breed was bred for work on American cattle farms. The name comes from the fact that these horses could cover a quarter mile the fastest.
It is a small, well-muscled horse. They are known for their high, muscular hindquarters that allow them to drop to the ground and turn quickly. They have a short head with a wide forehead and jaw and small ears. Most horses are between 1.40m and 1.60m with the occasional exception. They come in all solid colours.
They are mainly used in western sport, which has a choice of disciplines. Horses bred for one discipline can be totally different in appearance and character than horses bred for another discipline. A cutting bred horse is often much more fiery than a pleasure bred horse.
