General breed information
The Dutch Warmblood is actually not a real breed, but a studbook. This means that horses of all breeds are allowed in it, as long as they meet the Dutch Warmblood's standard. The Dutch Warmblood studbook originated, as the name suspects, in the Netherlands. Dutch Warmblood, or KWPN stands for Koninklijk Warmbloed Paardenstamboek Nederland (Royal Warmblood Studbook of the Netherlands). In terms of the number of foals born each year, the Dutch Warmblood studbook is the largest in the world. The Dutch Warmblood has four breeding lines, dressage horses, show jumpers, carriage horses and the Gelderlander horse. You will find the first two within My Horsez.
The first Dutch Warmbloods were created when people started writing down all bred foals in stud books. That was in 1887. But there were still all different small studbooks. In 1970, the last two studbooks merged to form the W.P.N., which received the royal prefix at its 100th anniversary.
Because it is a studbook and not a breed, there are few fixed characteristics. Dutch Warmblood show jumping and dressage horses have great willingness, reliability and intelligence in addition to an appealing conformation. The horse normally has one of the colours bay, black, brown, grey or variations thereof and measures from an E-pony up to 1.85.
