Belgian draught horse

The Belgian draught horse is a breed that can be bought for 350 pluscoins.

General breed information

The Belgian draught horse, also called Brabander, is, as the name suggests, a heavy cold-blood breed originating from Belgium. They have a very chilled nature and are not easily fooled. The horses are usually between 1.60m and 1.75m tall. They are powerful horses with a heavy neck and a relatively small head. They have very strong legs with lots of hair. In the past, it was customary to clip the tail (remove the root of the tail and all) so that it did not get in the way when working the land. Nowadays, this is forbidden in many countries, including the Netherlands and Belgium, as it is now done purely because people think it is beautiful or because ‘that is the way it should be with such a horse’.

The Belgian draught horse is an old breed that has been deliberately bred as a breed since the 17th century. However, in the 11th century there were already horses that were basically the same as the Belgian. In 1886, the studbook of the ‘Society of the Belgian draught horse was established, and by 1910 many Belgians were exported to improve other breeds, such as the Shire. Like many breeds, the Belgian Draught Horse suffered due to industrialisation. The number of horses declined sharply to 6,000 in 1980. Enthusiasts started working on the breed and today there are about 12,000 Belgians. They are mainly used for recreational driving or riding.
