General breed information
The Friesian is the best-known breed to come from the Netherlands. Horses with the same characteristics as the Friesian appeared as early as the 13th century. The Friesian used to be a popular war horse in the Middle Ages, as it was strong enough to carry all the armour and armaments. Subsequently, the horse became much sought after by wealthier farmers, who used it for lighter work in the fields during the week, and tacked it for the shepherd's carriage to ride to church on Sundays. Nowadays, the Friesian is increasingly bred to be a good sport horse, both for carriage and under saddle.
It is a square-built breed with a proud attitude and lots of hair. The shoulder height is between 1.55m and 1.70m. However, outliers up and down do occur. The Friesian is almost always black. Markings are very uncommon, and not desired. A small dot is condoned by the studbook.
