General breed information
The Haflinger originated in Tyrol, Austria. The first Haflinger was bred by crossing an Arabian stallion with a mountain mare. It got its name from the town of Hafling.
Today, the Haflinger is a sturdy recreational pony that is also very suitable as a children's pony because of their gentle nature, although they do have a will of their own. They are always flaxen chestnut and not palomino, as some people call it. Nowadays, a more modern type of haflinger is also bred that is more suitable for the sport and has a higher height. The average height is 1.45m.
