Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
Ah, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. Alright, I’ll admit it - I'm one of the last few people to finally watch this film. Spirit's iconic ride through the American West was uncharted territory for me, and I actually regret not experiencing this wonderful film sooner. Anyway, better late than never, right?
Music
Surely the biggest unexpected windfall of this film was the music. I didn't know at all that the film was a musical, but it was definitely not a wrong choice! Bryan Adams' songs convey the adventurous atmosphere perfectly. The music doesn't feel like background music, but an extra layer that enhances the emotion of the scenes. And yes, those songs really stick in your head too, leaving you reminiscing after the film. I especially found "
You can't take me" really catchy: what was your favourite song?
Theme
The thing that struck me thematically was the theme of the free west. You see in the film the vast nature: the open plains, mountains, rivers - places where humans have little influence. I incredibly liked how that eagle symbolised essential Spirit's freedom and how that flying comes back in the end? Really a highlight for me. As a viewer, you feel that urge to cross the horizon and find your own freedom, like Spirit. Or well, if nature had nice sofas, televisions and bags of chips, to enjoy this film one more time!
Spirit himself, of course, is the heart of the film. His determination to preserve his freedom makes him a classic hero. And I must admit, some scenes made me wipe my eyes for a moment. (Seriously, emotional recovery is still on the way.)
So for those fans who have known this film for years: I'm there now! Spirit is a story of freedom and courage that you won't soon forget. And for those like me who hadn't seen it yet: it's never too late! Have you seen
Spirit yet? And if so, did you like the film as much as I did?
