The Biggest Horses in the World!
These 4 horse breeds are one of the biggest in the world! From the gentle Shire to the beautiful Clydesdale, there are many different giant horse breeds. Come and discover more about some of the largest horse breeds in the world!
1. The big gentle giant: the Shire
With its maximum shoulder height of 2 m (!), it is officially the largest horse breed in the world. They originate from England, which is where their name comes from. Grass and pasture areas in central England were called 'shires'. People often let their horses graze in these areas, so therefore the name 'Shire'. Although they look huge, they can be safely ridden or cared for by children, as they have a very calm and friendly character.
2. The bay beauty of the draught horses: the Clydesdale
This horse breed originated in the mid-18th century in Scotland when the Scots began crossing Shires, the Belgian draught horse and Flemish stallions. Like the Shires, they are draught horses, and they can have a maximum height of 190 cm. Just as most draught horses, the Clydesdale has a calm, gentle temperament. They are often in the colour bay, with a white blaze and white legs.
3. Imposing yet kind-hearted: the Belgian draught horse
This breed is originally from Belgium, where it was used as a war horse during the 11th to 16th centuries. They were also often used in agriculture, mining, and pulled horse-drawn trams and carriages. Nowadays, they are mainly used for driving. Some people use them for riding or even for jumping! The most common colour is bay roan. Did you know that...? The 2nd largest horse ever was a Belgian draught horse? His name was Big Jake. He weighed 1,134kg and had a shoulder height of 2m10!
4. The majestic powerhouse of draught horses: the Percheron
Originally from France (the region of La Perche), the Percheron is an impressive cold-blooded horse known for its strength and majestic appearance. The Percheron has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages, and the breed is often praised for its stamina and friendly nature. These horses are known not only for their physical strength, but also for their willingness to work and their calm, reliable nature. They are often used in agricultural work, events and as imposing show horses. They are most often grey.
